In the summers of the 1930s, a middle-aged couple with their two black spaniels explored the British Columbia coast, searching for and photographing Indian rock art, and visiting with the many fishermen, loggers, Indians and homesteaders who then lived in the remote bays and inlets. Francis and Amy Barrow, chugging along in their little boat, the Toketie, as far north as Kingcome Inlet, made an important contribution to the record of coastal prehistory, while enjoying the idyllic cruising life of those early days. Francis kept journals and photographs of their leisurely expeditions, and from them emerges a vivid picture of a now-vanished coastal lifestyle.
